I had actually never heard of her until we went to a tiny children's museum in podunk PA in the middle of nowhere.  There was an area in the museum that was dedicated to females in STEM, and I was reading about this woman with my family (boy and girl), and all of us, including my DH who is a white male programmer, were surprised.

Then there's "Hidden Figures", and another story recently that came out about a famed French author over a hundred years ago who was actually a woman, but her husband took all the credit because.. yep, woman weren't allowed to publish books back then.  This kind of sh1t happened all the time.

This is the kind of thing that never gets taught to kids in school. It's all about white males because history in this country was written by white males.  I was saying to DH that I wonder how many other inventions and such were discovered by woman but was hidden by white males.  He agreed.
