The top teams in the state at U11 and U12 are populated by players who have the physical ability to play up a year and are dominating by size and speed, as well as the same skill level of less developed players in their age group.
The top teams in the state at U12 have no play ups. They always beat the teams that do have play ups. The teams with plays ups are weak on age and can’t even make the top bracket of Jeff Cup. But they do have parents that pump them up on the board every day. That parent will watch his DD lose to a top team 22-1 over 3 games and still think his kids team is better and more developed! Love is blind. If you want to claim you are better, come play us at a tournament and stop hiding.
I can understand the merits of discussing whether playing up is good or bad at young ages. But who in their right mind would keep the scores from U9-U12 age groups and tally them up if they mean something for long term development? Some players, who were on receiving end of such scores at the young age groups, are now some of the top players in the area in the older age groups. Things change. I've seen too many teams that were crushing the opposition at U11-U12, but were no longer competitive by the time they reached U16.
The point is that the Loudoun parents know the FCV teams and simply do not respect the FCV teams. Sure, scores get closer as time goes on but frankly FCV is not a destination club for these sets of parents and to them the FCV team in particular is not a destination team. And, by the same token, the results of games over two years ago don't matter much in the same vein as the success of the older FCV teams do not matter to this group of 07 parents. Also, older FCV team success is not a thing that is inherited and something that should be expected. The landscape in the region was much, much different when those older teams were formed. The FCV 05 team lost to Spirit MD. based on Spirit's start last year who would have thought that would happen, but here we are in a evolving landscape. So until FCV is willing to face Loudoun Red in a tournament the lingering impression in the minds of the parents is that of a team that they have steamrolled in the past. Playing in second brackets in second level tournaments is not convincing them of FCV's development success either.
