Question for those of you who chose family names for your DC. Would you have done the same thing if people in your family all had awful names, or did you just happen to get lucky that your family members had great monikers? It feels to me like there's often this subtle (or sometimes not so subtle) air of superiority among those who pick family names for their kids--like parents who (gasp!) choose names they just happen to like are somehow beneath everyone else. If you're lucky enough that grandma had a beautiful and (surprise!) suddenly trendy name, congratulations, but please don't look down on me for not naming my kid Bernice or Aloysius.
We used a family name (middle name) for our daughter. She is the 5th generation to have that middle name. As a kid, I didn't really like the name - seemed old fashioned, but as an adult I think it's pretty. But, I really like that 4 women before her had that same middle name - they were rather remarkable women and I hope my DD has that pride as well. My DH has said if we have a son, the middle name will be his middle name. Personally, I hate the middle name and think it's horrible. However, it is DH's middle name, was his gradfather's name and also the name of others going back to the 1800's. DH's family were slaves in Texas, so it's pretty remarkable we have found history back to the 1850's. Again, I don't like the name, but it is important to DH. DH's father died when he was young, and I think this will be an important connection to that side of the family he doesn't know much about.
