The MLS needs promotion relegation now that it has matured as a league.  When it was founded 30 years ago, the owners and league were strongly against any promotion relegation structure because they wanted to build the teams without fear of losing the MLS status.  I understand this rationale.  New league, needs new fans, this take time and consistency and investment and if the team can be relegated right away, why would an owner stick to investing in a league that is unproven? Makes sense.

The problem now is that you have a league that has been around for three decades and teams, like DCU, that are milking the system and the lack of promotion relegation to their benefit.  DCU can be last place every year but as long as people keep buying tickets, they turn a profit.  There is no real incentive to invest.  Especially for owners that aren't soccer savvy investors just lure business people.

With promotion relegation the threat of being relegated requires investment or the club will lose significant money.  In DCUs case, a relegated DCU will force a change in ownership because the owners won't see a profit in the USL Championship or lower.  This change in ownership will allow a real owner to come in and improve the club for the long term.

Right now, DCU makes money and the owner doesn't really need to do much.  There are two ways to change this.  Advocate for promotion relegation in the MLS and/or stop buying tickets to DCU games.  The problem with the latter option is that DCU fans are much like Commanders fans, they are loyal to the brand despite being undervalued. Once the fans rise up, change could happen.

Until then, everything at DCU will sorry.  First team and without question the academy which is a total after thought in the grand scheme of everything DCU is dealing with as a club [/quote]
