Has your 14 year old gotten drunk, stolen a car, run into a tree and ended up in the hospital with broken legs because he was upset you weren't there?  I find Aiden super annoying in many ways - the hair, the coats, his attraction to Carrie, but I completely get his reaction to this.

Do you not get that people say weird things in an unexpected crisis, when hearing unexpected news? When my mom called to tell my aunt that their mother had died, my aunt immediately said, “I can’t come to the funeral if it is this weekend. Phil has a work trip and he’s getting an award at a dinner.” My mom—wisely—just said, “OK, Carole, you just do what you need to do.”

An hour later, my aunt called back and said oh my God, I can’t believe I said that, of course I’ll be there. No one knows what to say and how to react perfectly when something out of their control is happening to someone they love. [/quote]
