I think the issue with BSC is that more than any other Club, they had the potential to get it right. They attract the best talent and nurturing it and growing it truly from the inside would’ve engendered a love and loyalty and success rate that no other Club could match. Achilles definitely outdoes them on every front regarding this except that the owners and coaches are not everybody’s cup of tea and they have a style that is very abrasive. But they engendered true love and loyalty and really develop talent from the inside out. The track record is unmatched. Bethesda is owned by great people and has some really good coaches and attracts the top-tier talent by a mile, but they allow mid range coaches that pretend they’re hot stuff to throw their kids in the garbage and allow those coaches to choose kids from the outside and throw kids in the trash like they’re nothing. I have three kids, one is a BSC second team player that has been on track, the other one a top player at Armour who has been scouted to play for the youth national team for our home country and he didn’t get a second look from BSC, and a third who has seen what his brother has gone through at Bethesda and would never play for them. With all the resources and talent BSC has access to and all the soccer IQ and intelligence they possess, they should see that throwing kids in the trash is a regrettable move and will sink them in the long run. As for me, if my Middle son didn’t love his team and teammates so much and love the club we would move him, but I also can’t handle the long commute for other clubs so we are kind of stuck. It’s a sad statement when we should be at BSC because they are excellent but instead, we are there because they are close by. I wish someone in management would understand what they are doing and try to make changes, but until then we can only hope. And once other teams on our side get MLS next, which is inevitable, BSC will be sunk.
We have a split household as well although we are BSC/Achilles. My only comment is that the Achilles coaches are little lovable Napoleon's. They are abrasive from a distance but they love those kids and the parents way more than the "pseudo" love of my other kids BSC coaches. People judge too often what a reputation is without seeing it. They are no worse than my kids little grandma who will give it to you straight. As you said, we have to cater to our kids preferences but if BSC coaches simply went to a few Achilles trainings and implemented what they are doing there with the talent BSC is able to recruit, there would be no hope for anyone in the Mid-Atlantic. One of my kids love his mates at BSC so I have to play the coaching roulette annually until that feeling changes.
