the Whitman suggestion arose because involuntary busing won't equalize FARMS rates because people will segregate (because they always do).  the question became how can you increase the FARMS rate at Whitman, given it is so far away, without involuntary busing.  the suggestion was to allow kids to voluntarily lottery in.  the challenge is of course the length of the bus ride.[/quote]

I do. This proposal is not practical and will harm both the kids that get bussed and the kids who can't swing the commute, which would be significantly longer than any commute proposed in Option 3.[/quote]

I don't care about increasing the farms rate at Whitman. People who live there chose it willingly. I would love to decrease the farms rates at DCC schools but that's not going to happen in any significant way, so I definitely don't want to bus  half of the most academically inclined kids out of the DCC.[/quote]

I don't think it will be more than 25-30 FARMS kids who will opt for it. That's like 3-4 kids per school and that's being optimistic. Entire DCC has way more than 50 academically inclined kids.[/quote]

Nah, MCPS should do it to provide oppurtunity to FARMS kids to attend schools having less than 20% FARMS. It will help some FARMS kids a lot who are in position to opt for it.

If it can be done for magnet then why not for FARMS kids. I am not from Whitman.[/quote]
