I am fully opposed to everything Trump is doing in DC, and find his rhetoric reprehensible. However I am frustrated with my fellow DC residents who think the solution here is to simply deny that we have serious crime issues, or that the current status of unhoused people in the District is fine, or that juvenile crime isn't a significant problem that is linked to a variety of other issues DC desperately needs to address (education of at risk kids, graduation rates, joblessness among young black men, teen pregnancies, child abuse and neglect in the city, etc.). Trump is an idiot who is trying really hard to become a fascist dictator, but going Pollyanna about the very real crime issues in the city is not the solution. And yes I am a loooooongtime resident of the District, and I live in a neighborhood with a long history of crime issues that had gotten much, much better between 2010 and 2020, but has taken a turn for the worse since Covid that really concerns me.
DC resident but newer, only 25 years, here. Crime went up during Covid. The data doesn’t support your statement that it is high now. It has come down a lot. As with all cities, it also depends what neighborhood you are in. I’m not Pollyanna about crime. I live in a quiet neighborhood that doesn’t see much crime beyond porch pirates and loose change stolen from cars. But I’m sure Ward 7 and 8 see more crime. Again the crime stats don’t support your claim!
Crime is down from its peak during and immediately post-Covid, it is not down to pre-Covid levels. The murder rate remains very high compared to pre-Covid. And juvenile crime, especially juvenile violent crime, is still up and at totally unacceptable levels. DC also continues to struggle with a high number of unhoused people since Covid, and this impacts a number of quality of life factors that don't show up in violent crime statistics. For instance, talk to local businesses about challenge they have with unhoused people coming into stores and restaurants to use the bathrooms, steal food, occupy tables, take naps, etc. Ask them if these issues are better or worse than pre-Covid. And I live in Ward 5, not 7 or 8. But btw people who live in Wards 7 and 8 also deserve safe communities, and crime was down across the river pre-Covid as well. One of the the worse outcomes of the crime surge in the last 5 years has been that it has halted progress in Wards 7 and 8 in creating safer, more prosperous communities, attracting more development and investment. This is bad for the city as a whole. Much of the crime you see in places like Chinatown and Navy Yard can be linked to problems in Wards 7 and 8 that result in bored, angry teens looking for trouble. It's all interconnected. You can't pretend like Wards 7 and 8 are just a different city that don't concern you. Again, Trump's "solution" is not what I want. But pretending there is no problem won't work either. I see this most often from UMC and wealthy people who live in parts of the city with the lowest crime rates to begin with. Where I live, I cannot pretend crime isn't an issue.
