It's an act of giving up of the self desires that do not benefit you or others to become closer to God. Not something that God does to you to make you feel good about yourself. Praying to not get caught on something you know is wrong is obviously not Godly thinking. There seems to be no greater good for him or for others that he was trying to achieve.
