Brother not BIL was within his rights to say exactly what he said.  Tradition or not.  You still don't seem to grasp that OP's wife has no right to tell  brother  how he should spend his own money.

Some of you folks seem like you must be so used to grabbing other peoples money and getting away with it that you think it's always fair game to try and the victim of the extortion attempt has to sit there and take it.
