[/quote] I think Rice has been perceived somewhat higher than Emory and for longer. That is actually the advantage Duke over other Southern schools as well. it has gotten academic recognition outside of just the South for several decades more than Vanderbilt, for instance, which now has very similar student selectivity numbers to Duke. If you went back to the 1980, that would not have been the case. If you went back further in the post Civil War period, pretty much no Southern school was recognized at the level of top Northern schools until Duke.[/quote]
