Can the government perhaps step in to seize Twitter (to nationalize it in effect) in order to prevent the disinformation and unbridled chaos that social media has caused and has since 2018 destroyed democracy?
So going for the Putin/Xi/Maduro plan?
Not at all. No one foresaw how problematic giving everyone a platform would become. Unfortunately many just spew hate or spread disinformation about subjects they are little qualified to speak on. We were very naive in the past. So maybe the government doesn’t nationalize social media, but rather heavily regulates it like we do with other industries - maybe through the FCC. As seen all the time, the majority of Americans simply lack the self-control decorum to check themselves.
NP Free speech wasn’t the problem. The problem began with the feeds that created bubbles for individuals. For example, you like cats and the social media feeds just keep sending you cat info/videos. This puts you in a bubble. You didn’t have see or hear legit opposing ideas or opinions (no dog or hamster videos in your feeds!). From there marketing and groups started exploiting this to make people more dug in on their sides. It became a divide and conquer tactic and it has been working. I hen you divide the country, you weaken it. There’s a third force afoot that isn’t blue or red, and not even a combo of the two. This third force is another color entirely and it isn’t good.
