That doesn't appear to be true to a significant extent as the ROI and value add analysis shows UVA grads perform along the lines of other public schools in the area, like Virginia Tech and UMD, and not along the lines of schools like Duke in these metrics. UVA grads might be better off if they felt they have more to prove. Perhaps because of this expectation, a lower percentage of UVA students are entering tough but cutting-edge majors compared to top schools. It appears UVA is aware of this and is working to create programs like data science, but there is a still a marked difference in this regard between UVA and most schools to which UVA would want to compare itself.
