I've been a pretty frequent poster on this thread and I am going to pause and try and do a summary 1. It's better for society to mix people together vs tracking. Studies have shown that the high performers still stay high performing and that lower performers have strong benefits from mixing vs tracking 2. Now my point throughout this thread is that I am a realist. As a parent you are going to do what's in the best interest of your child and since this is DCUM and most here are higher SES and higher performing that means seeking out a school that has higher performing children and tracking. Real estate prices bare this out and even then many higher SES parents choose private schools. Diversity is almost never a factor in education decisions. 3. I forget who said it but the only solution I see in this is for people to continue to act in their own best interest and send their kids to the best school possible (that's human nature) and volunteer/donate in schools that serve less well off populations. And let me say again talking about diversity is not a logical argument. Home values are not higher in more diverse environments they are higher in areas that have higher test scores.
If you go over to the real estate board, you'll see lots of people posting they are looking for a diverse neighborhood and school. It is simply false that no one considers this. Furthermore, not everyone chooses a house based solely on the school it is zoned to. Many people choose houses for their location, yard, home features, proximity to things they need, etc. and have faith that the school situation will be fine, because it will. If you think white parents really all maximize the whiteness of the schools their children attend because that's definitively better, how do explain the fact that there are any whites at all at Einstein, Blair, Northwood, etc.? Are they trapped there against their will? Delusional?
The lack of reading comprehension of some of you is truly astounding. Your third sentence is especially ridiculous I know most parents value higher school quality over diversity and I know school quality drives real estate prices
Schools drive real estate prices to a point. But clearly there are other factors or you wouldn’t be able to pay 450-460 to a fully renovated four bedroom four bathroom home with eat in kitchen open floor plan and giant yard with GS ratings of 9-10 in Howard county. It’s so cheap cause it is far from the city and no wher near metro, where many homes in the DCC command well more than that because of those factors. Commute, public transit, walkability factors in too.
