I know not everyone is Christian, but this is exactly what the admonition "Love thy neighbor" and "Turn the other cheek" refers to. Being a bigger, better person DESPITE what others are doing. It's how the Civil Rights movement overcame an extremely segregated country.

[/quote]The Civil Rights movement overcame because we got out into the streets and demanded civil rights and justices as afforded whites.  If you mean bigger and better because we tolerated attack dogs, beatings, hosing, and other horrific treatment DESPITE what others are doing, you will retract those words inevitably.  Those heinous acts will NEVER be tolerated again and the cheek will not be turned.
