I am saying that I personally like the 'courtyard' look of the garage turned toward the house, but we didn't like the function as much.  If we were building it again, we would probably build one that way, but allow a wider breezeway or connection between the house and the garage, maybe use this as the mud room.   That would allow for a little more room for cars to turn around, etc without being on top of the porch[/quote]

+1 That's why the picture that pp posted looks better.  The garage is further to the side of the house, so it doesn't look like it's blocking the house itself. A breezeway or mudroom connecting it to the house would look even better.[/quote]

We really like both the form and function of a 'courtyard' set-up.  A breezeway connection or mudroom is a great transition.  We especially like having the garage doors in sight since we're in and out all day and we usually don't close the doors once their open in the morning until we pull in for the last time at night.
