Who are all these nasty fish eaters? Are they foreign? I can't imagine anyone born and raised in the USA thinking the smell won't bother anyone.
Our fish eater - the one who spilled it all over his chair - is a millennial born and raised in the USA. But that should answer your question on who would think a smell wouldn't bother anyone.
I'm born and raised in the US and the fish smell doesn't bother me. Nor does the smell of Indian food, Chinese food, or just about any other strong-smelling cuisine one could heat up. The smell of reheated broccoli is pretty bad though. You want bad -- I spent a few years in Japan (maybe that's why fish smells don't bother me!) and there is nothing worse, food-wise, than a freshly opened bag of dried squid or shrimp sticks. So so awful.
