I had a baby who woke up at 5:30am for over a year. The key part is being in bed EARLY. You can't go to bed at 11pm and think that getting up at 5am will be easy. I go to bed by 9:30pm every single night. It's rare I stay up later. If I'm sick, or had a rough week, it's not unusual for me to be in bed at 8:45pm. My now toddler is in bed before 7pm, so that clearly is what makes this possible. But no matter what, getting to bed early every night is the key.
Totally true. My crappy sleeping second kid made me a morning person. I do appreciate it now! But those very early wake ups made it so that we were in bed literally at 8 pm some nights because we were so exhausted and would be up all night and then for good at 4:30. Her sleeping got better but the habit of going to bed on the early side stuck around so I wake up earlier now, and easier. Op is right, getting up at 5 am and having time to piddle around without rushing is such a nice start to the day. I ended up going back to school for my Master's last year and that habit was so good to have because it meant I was fine with waking up very early to squeeze in schoolwork and whatnot. So basically yes: go to bed at 9 if you can so that a 5 am wake up doesn't feel brutal.
