The actual subject grade is an effort grade and the subsets are the mastery grades.  Read the report card. So your kid could master the material, but isn't putting forth the perceived amount of effort to do so, and receive all 4s for the subsets and 3s on the actual subject grade.  One of my kid's report cards always looks like that.

Strangely though, only the final subject effort grade is used to calculate the presidential certificate given at the end of sixth grade, not the subset grades that are reoated to mastery.

Wait, now I'm really confused.  There are the "understands material" grades and then the one "effort" grade for each subject.  Are you saying that the "effort" grade is the "real/total" grade for the subject?  We were told by the teacher at the beginning of the year, that the effort grade was were homework and perceived "effort" is assessed.  The understand material grades are based on whether they have mastered/understand the material.

I have a kid that scores 4 on all tests and assignments that get completed, but homework rarely makes it home, so it clearly can't get turned in.  We expected to see low effort grades (she really doesn't try because she doesn't have to).  But, then there was one "understands material" sections in two areas that were 3s (with the rest 4s).  We don't understand how that's possible when every piece of paper that has come home with 4s on it.  Teacher explicitly told us that homework grades AREN'T put in understand material grades, but is counted in effort grade.

I guess my first question at the meeting is to explain what factors are considered in each area of grading. [/quote]
