I'm no doctor, but the word "stabilize" probably varies from patient to patient and condition to condition.

He was found unconscious with some sort of "mucous type liquid" coming out of his nose and mouth. So he may have been vomiting and in convulsions at some point. The medics/doctors got that "stopped" (i.e., stable), but it doesn't mean he is well or even going to survive.

Many years ago, I knew someone who was struck by lightning. Even though 911 was called, no one could get through, so a neighbor ended up driving him to the hospital. He was lying in the back of the van quite ill. After he got to the hospital, the docs got him "stable" and they were hopeful, but the strike was too much for his body and he died a couple of days later.
