Funny story along the lines of this being an Indian name (I am not Indian BTW) my kindergarten teacher used to call me Indira.  She was a very old Caucasian woman.   :-)

Yes, it's amazing the ways people will find to mispronounce names!!  I have an Indian name that's spelled phonetically...I really can't figure out any other way to sound out the letters of my name than two possible pronunciations, both of which I'm fine with.  But it's amazing what people will call me...switching around sounds and adding letters that don't exist in my name.  Basically any name, with any number of syllables, that starts with the same letter as my name seems to be fair game.  An analogy would be people calling me Isabel when my name is Indira.  It's very strange, but it's life.

The Indian community in which I grew up seems to think there are only a handful of names of white men...so when my sister got married they got cards addressed to a whole bunch of Mikes, Marks, Daves (BIL's name is none of those).  When I got married, about half of the cards were addressed to me and my BIL's name :)[/quote]
