MAYBE the parents weren't home and it was ANOTHER adult? That is possible, too.
MAYBE the kids are in charge and they DO what they want. That is possible, too, that they don't really have parents.
No offense because I see why you would draw this conclusion, but I know all of these kids and they do have loving, caring parents. Please try to remember these are real people who loved their kids as much as any of us love our kids.
I will not pass judgement on the parents of the victims. I don't know them personally but they are well respected in our community. My heart is broken for them. But I will pass judgement on any parent who allows a child to consume alcohol in their home. There are plenty of parents who love their children but that doesn't make them good parents. A good parent is a parent first and foremost and does not fear setting limits. I don't know if the homeowner was aware of the party taking place. I'm not sure if the adult present was even the homeowner. If they are truly innocent I'm sorry that they'll be tried and convicted in the court of public opinion. But if they knew, there's not an excuse in the world. What really bothers me is that the parents of kids in this social circle are justifying what happened. The message is still not getting through!
That's really disappointing. It's probably so horrific, they can't handle it any other way right now but to someone make it seem OK. I have a friend who's child just graduated, and the friend and other parents were very thoughtful about hosting a graduation party for some of the kids, in one of their homes. They ended up serving alcohol. They put in place all the "reasonable" things people talk about (taking keys, etc.), but I hope that this accident helps people understand there really should be zero tolerance for this type of thing.
