OP - We have two German Shepherds. Other dogs may not understand or deserve Birthday celebrations, but GSDs are different! (Kidding....sort of ;)). We always have a little party for ours! They get a piece of cake and a new toy. It's more for us than for them. They get really excited when they get a new toy no matter what the occasion. And yes, bitter PPs...Santa does bring our GSDs treats and toys. Our kids would be sad if the dogs were left out.
Our GSD also gets a song, birthday treat, and new toy on his bday. Our child's birthday is the next day and they are a year apart, so back-to-back fun. :) His doggy daycare has also celebrated his birthday and posts pics on FB of him in birthday hat, etc.--he usually looks like he has no idea what's going on but loves the attention. He also has a stocking full of treats/toys at Christmas time--I know, he's super spoiled!
