OP, just do your research. Assess your needs as far as commute, schools, real estate prices, taxes, crime, etc. and make the decision that works best for you and your family. Both PGC and PWC are regularly trashed on this board by people who know nothing about them. It's as if anyone who doesn't live in MoCo or Fairfax either lives in a trashy, crime-ridden ghetto with awful schools, or has a soul-killing commute. We've found our happy medium in Prince William County. Our commutes are tolerable, we were able to purchase a brand-new home in a diverse, upper-middle-class neighborhood for less than half of what it would have cost inside the Beltway, and our son goes to a very good elementary school within walking distance of our home. We've lived in this area for over 10 years and never had an issue with crime. We have some nice retail options available, including Wegmans, Potomac Mills, and various shops at Potomac Town Center. Restaurants are mostly chains but we do have some hidden gems as well. We are happy here. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to have a very nice life outside the Beltway bubble.
