This is shitty advice. $800 is only 2.86 times gross. This is an entirely arbitrary figure. There are various calculators out there and there's a reason the bank pre-approved for 1.2 mil.

We make about the same. Bought 800k home in school one we love.

And we love never having to stress about money. We have simple tastes, but the impulse 'lets go to Disney for spring break' is easy. 
Kids only young once. More house is more rooms. And more downside if housing ever drops [/quote]
