Last year I was in the lottery for first and pk3. We were ultimately offered spaces in first at Lee, MV, CMI, and ITS. I can say that after reviewing the stats, although there were fewer spaces available for first, there was less competition for first grade. I did the percentages and it was much harder to get in for Pk3 even though there were more spaces because there were a lot more applicants.
Where did you pick? We're trying to decide whether to put in an application for pk3 and 1st in the upcoming lottery or stick with our current school (where we have sibling preference for the PS3). I figure that if we apply elsewhere our chances of getting are actually reasonable for first as there are so few less applicants.
Apply for the 1st grader. If you're not totally happy where you are, why not? Your PS3 would then go to the top of the waitlist for wherever the 1st grader gets in.
We're fairly happy where we are. Who knows if we would be more happy with a different school. It can be disruptive to switch. Basically I want to be certain (or almost) that we'd take the move if we got in and perhaps it's a case of "better the devil you know". Also, it might be hard, for example to have my oldest start 1st grade at, say, Mundo Verde without any Spanish.
