B/c sick days are not mandated by law. So employers don't have to provide them and most don't. Why should they? It's money out of their pockets and they're in business to make money, not for the public good.
I am the OP. This is not a discussion about whether the sick person gets paid for the day they are not working because they are sick. That's an employment question and an agreement between the employer and the employee. My kid does not get paid if she does not work--its how it should be, she is in a part time position--she does not get sick pay or vacation or anything. That was not the question. But to threaten someone with termination of employment because they are sick, that is what the issue is here. In a food service industry, that is not acceptable. You are bullying and threatening people into working with an illness they are then spreading to other people, both coworkers and customers. Its not right. My concern is that my kid is doing this for pocket money. There are so many people working in food service who are feeding families and cannot afford to as easily lose a job. Its not right-it puts the workers in a position of no choice. And that puts public safety at risk. Same for hospital workers, daycare workers, etc! And again, I realize the whole "lying" thing is an issue, whatever, just require a doctors note to "prove" it, if you want. That makes THAT a non-issue. I am not going to post the name of the restaurant as this could very well be one location, one particular manager-does not seem fair to me to "out" the entire company. Its a huge, very well known chain.
