I know it sounds disgusting but I didn't care about hygiene when I was young despite how many times my mother nagged me to clean it. Now repeat this x20 over many kids and other kids who didn't care for a school issued one. I now just grab my daughters school issued one and put it in our family dishwasher. No fuss. No nagging.
