Our team events usually center around sporting events - eg. We get a box at a baseball or hockey game, or do something ridiculous like go play paintball. It gives people something to DO, which releases the tension, and doesn't remind people that they would rather be at home. They do tend to be a lot of fun, even though our team is a bunch of really mixed demographic.

It sounds like you did the best your could with a situation that really isn't ideal from the start. Your menu sounds lovely, and it sounds like you were as gracious as could be expected.
