Our school uses a number system, where all walkers and car riders are assigned a number and parents are given a card with that number on it that they can either hold (if they are a walker) or display in their car if they are picking up car-riders. All of the kids wait in the cafeteria (supervised by adults and patrols) and then are walked individually by an adult to their parent/car. They dismiss independent walkers (kids who walk home without an adult) first.
Is this at a public school?
Yes, an MCPS school.
They used to do it like that at RHPS.
Not any more. My kids are bus-riders at RHPS but I was sort of surprised at how little supervision there was for walkers. At least in my (somewhat limited) there is no real oversight over who takes whom. No numbers, no checking whatsoever. I have to admit that I wondered if this was a function of the fact that at least some of the families who are walkers are probably the least empowered and least likely to demand careful scrutiny.
