Just curious, do people refer to "poors" or "the poors" IRL, or just on DCUM? Personally, I find it totally horrifying that people would talk this way, but perhaps I'm just not wealthy enough to disdain people who have less money than I do.
I'm curious, whether anyone on this forum would actually volunteer to live in an area with multiple ethnic backgrounds and white is a minority, with a median income of $20,000/year. Think about it and maybe stop being so hypocritical.
Uh, actually you're describing my neighborhood when I moved in 12 years ago. And that neighborhood was amazingly friendly and warm - I had never seen an urban neighborhood like that before and was humbled to think that previously I would have been nervous driving my car through the neighborhood. But here's the question about the grandmother -- as one person noted, she's 75. Is she in good health? Is she trustworthy? Is she going to make sure the kid doesn't wander off down the street? Also, how long has she lived in the neighborhood and how well does she know her neighbors? Does she have some reasonably stable neighbors she can call on in case of emergency? But ultimately, OP has to do what she is comfortable with. My kid grew up in this neighborhood and was fine but I kept a very close eye on her. Also, one day when she was playing in the basement with a friend, someone was murdered in broad day light by a guy settling a beef in a nearby pocket park. I would never have let my kid go to that park because it was just a place where adults hung out but it was quite chilling nevertheless that someone had been so bold and so pissed off as to walk straight up to the guy and shoot him. Okay, so I guess the essential question is whether the grandmother has good judgment. And even if she has good judgment, if it makes you nervous, OP, you should probably go with your gut. I bet nothing would happen but in the end you have to be comfortable with your choices.
