Would you name this to a baby girl? I know there are Tommy girls out there but I want to know the bad stories about girl with this name. DH want to give our girl this name when she is born. This name is after a great friend "Tom" who helped us ton that we can't pay back so DH promised to name our first kid after him. I disagree because this name sound more like a boy than a girl. She may be made fun of when in school with the name but DH doesn't listen and said there are worse name than this, he knows a girl name Ryan. He said the name is meaningful and it matters to the us (family) not outsider. Would you agree?
OP, the bigger issue is not that you're considering a traditionally-boy-name for a girl--the concern is the reason why you're doing it. When DD inevitably gets teased about having a boy name, she isn't going to care it she was named after a war hero or a homeless guy; she'll just be embarrassed. Also consider how she's going to feel about her name when she finds out she was named after a guy because her parents owed a debt they couldn't pay, and how she'll feel when she's around Tom. Think about DD, not about Tom or paying him back. I have no idea who offered this alternative solution, but it seems a little selfish and arrogant, especially if it were Tom's idea.
Sadly, many homeless people are war heroes.
