The North could have ended the war sooner if he would have acted.[/quote] Not really, his army was green and the universal battlefield strategy of the era taught at West Point was penned by Clauswitz who said armies should engage almost exclusively in flanking maneuvers giving ground rather than fight battles of attrition. Grant was the anomaly of the era ... not McClennan. McClennan built the army which Grant used to win the war. [/quote]
