Can Catania win? I am totally voting for him. But seriously, can he win? Have there been any polls?
Bowser is ahead in the polls right now, but it's April and much of the electorate didn't vote in the Dem primary and are only starting to focus now. And as they focus, the DME proposals are front and center. Catania needs grassroots organization, which is where Bowser does well, We parents all need to do our part to help him -- talk to family members, friends, neighbors. I read that Bowser's vote total on April 1 primary day represented something like 6 percent of the registered voters in DC. That's hardly a mandate, folks! As the voters' opinions crystalize over the coming months, Catania's support will steadily increase. Remember he can win -- and thereby so can we!
I'm all in for Catania, but that 6 percent is misleading. Gray's number was only 35% and he won in a landslide. That registered voter number is inflated by the young, transients who get driver's licenses but never intend to vote. For the last two decades, there are roughly 100k votes to divvy up for mayor. Turnout in Gray/Fenty was huge because so many people east of the river hated Fenty with a capital H. I expect them to go back to their apathetic ways. If Catania can quickly cut that 30 point lead down to something reasonable, I think he can get some traction. A big benefit for him is that Rs and Is have been desperate for someone to support for years and they could get energized. That's a solid 10k in votes. Bowser starts with a much bigger piece of the pie, but I'm not sure who is actually excited about her.
