If you tell your 12, 14y it's ok to have wine at dinner (which we sometimes do), then should they assume that they are allowed to drink at anytime--and "sure, shoot some scotch at party if you want Biff, I can't say anything since I promised you could drink at dinner!" No, you lock your liquor cabinet when your kid has friends over. This is what I'm doing with scheduled parental controls. You can give your kids freedom without exposing them to harm at this age.
