I have been really confused by Joel moving out. I don't get why. Because his wife allowed herself to be in a position to be kissed by someone and still refused the advance? It's just so lame. Zeke normally annoys me so much, but when he's good, he's just great. Loved his visit to Joel. Sidney is annoying in every single scene she has EVER been in. She's more annoying than Dana in Homeland. I'm totally on team Sarah this episode. Max was out of line. How else could she have handled it? Risk missing a critical deadline? I can't stand when Christina goes into Mama Bear mode over Max. I know I should find it admirable, but I don't. Or I guess I do in theory, but Max aggravates me. I wish they'd give him some (any!) endearing qualities. And I say this as a parent to a similar kind of kid. Drew-- You have no claim on Natalie. Stop being pissed that she has a life of her own. I hope they don't sell the house. It's one of the best characters in the whole show.
She had an emotional affair, and lied about it.
I disagree. She had no romantic illusions about that guy. She only ever saw him as a friend, albeit one she became too close to. If he had been a woman, all of those same actions and thoughts would have been completely benign. They shared the kind of stuff that girlfriends share with each other. She just needed a friend. During that whole period, she kept trying to connect to Joel (i.e. the scene where she went to his work trailer wearing sexy things to seduce him). Her romantic focus was always Joel.
The thing is early in the first episode almost exactly the same thing happened where Joel was the SAHP, began to spend time with a female parent and she tried to kiss him. I think a bigger issue is that Joel put his life on hold for years to support Julia and her career. He enjoyed being a SAHD, but at the same time everything in the family was focused on supporting Julia's career, Julia's role as mother, etc . . . Then after he made those sacrifices she walked away from the career he helped built, without consulting him and forced him to switch roles. But once he became the primary breadwinner, she still expected him to be at her beck and call. I think he was frustrated at how self centered she is, and when the opportunity to leave presented itself he took it.
But Julia didn't walk away from her career. She was fired and devastated because of it. She did NOT want to be a SAH parent. She did want a little more balance after they adopted their son, but that was understandable given his extra needs while adjusting to a new family. I always felt like Joel was totally supportive of those efforts. She did expect Joel to still be available sometimes after he started working, but her demands weren't really frivolous or frequent. She was clearly struggling in her new role at home-- both with the "work" of it and with the blow to her identity and ego-- and I don't think Joel really appreciated that. I get that his job is demanding and his boss is unforgiving but he just didn't even seem sympathetic to Julia. Her world was totally rocked by losing her job, and Joel treated her like a pesky bug.
