From 2007 to 2014, it has increased by - total of about 15%. I have lived through 1987, 2000' and 2008. Factor in the bad years, and you hope for 4-5 %. For me, in July 2007 to the present, my 401k increased from 400k to 640k, but 140k was my contributions. The flip side is march 2009 the balance was 180k.
