Ashley Wagner has carried the US ladies team for the past four years. Without her there wouldn't even have been a third spot for the US ladies at the Olympics. She deserved the benefit of the doubt and a spot on the team, anyone saying otherwise doesn't follow the sport enough to have an informed opinion.
The Olympics aren't a lifetime achievement award. Yes, she was good as recently as a year ago. Now she isn't in the top 3. NBC needed her after Lindsay Vonn pulled out as the "hot" American athlete. Pure and simple. And the lady she replaced, keep in mind, was an experienced Olympian whose only crime was to not be in the mean girls circle with the other skaters. Yes, she is also apparently a gigantic bitch, but I'm guessing there are more of those in the Olympics than NBC cares to acknowledge.
Ashley Wagner is an accomplished skater. She did not perform her best when it counted. As much as everyone wants to believe all is fair in the Olympics is a fair and equal competition it is not. Figure skating is dominated by politics-- the federation, the ISU, and the judges. Just look at the judging controversy surrounding the ice dancerers.
There is such ignorance on this thread. US Nationals are not and have never been official Olympic trials. USFSA fought tooth and nail to make that happen, and they did. As such, only #1 placed skater at US Nationals is guaranteed a berth on the Olympic team. Everyone else is up to the discretion of USFSA, and they exercised their right to send the skater who they believe will perform under pressure - a feat Nagasu did not accomplish as often as she did. USFSA looks at the skater's entire body of work over the last 12 months, not results of one competition, even it's the one everyone gets to watch. Ashley Wagner's body of work over the last 12 months trumps Nagasu's.
