I think that is DC's concern. Worked out how much will be needed for med school, and since we will be paying, DC does not want to run out of funds. As long as they send kids to top med schools I should probably not be too concerned?
Medical school acceptance is straightforward: grades, MCAT score, and history of volunteering in the medical profession. Working in a lab doesn't hurt. But as long as your kid has good grades, particularly in pre-med classes and a high MCAT score, they are pretty much golden. It also matters less when it comes to getting into the super competitive programs like Harvard and UCSF and so on...wherever you go to med school as long as you pass your boards you will become an M.D. and have a decent salary. It is far less all or nothing than law where getting into the top 10 schools really matter for your employment prospects. Perhaps this matters if you are dead set on specializing in one of the most competitive fields of medicine and working at one of the best hospitals in the nation, but for the most part, any US medical school will land you nice job security. The only reason you might be "concerned" is if your kid changes their mind and wants to transition into a field where prestige matters more and decides they don't want to go into medicine.
