Richmond!! And I'm not Southern. VCU has changed the city for the better, putting to rest many of the stereotypes listed here. Houses on Monument Ave for a song (by DC standards), the James, the Byrd & shopping at funky places there, Better restaurants all the time, nice gay community, Museum District, ART...only bummer is smaller job market.
My niece is at Univ. Richmond and nephew is at VCU now-- and WOW! It's the first time I've been to Richmond in about 20 years. I was super impressed. The bars and restaurants are much cooler than DC....and the architecture reminded me so much of Dupont/Georgetown (where I live, btw). They had a real, live 'running of the Bulls' and tomato festival last August. It was the coolest thing ever. I don't know in my 40s if I'd want to live there-hmmm.. DH went to school in Baltimore so there is love--but it is grittier/blue collarish like Cleveland/Detroitish. Can I pick Boston:)?
