Palliative care. It is to manage pain etc. Before hospice care. Does not mean terminal at that point.
+1. I am 50 and have advanced cancer: stage 4 kidney cancer. Currently, no tumors are identified. 5 year survival rate is less than 50%; 10 year less than 30%. But, I will probably be alive for at least a year. Physically, with the exception of pain from surgical scars (and because of the removed kidney, I can not take most non-narcotic pain meds), I feel pretty good most of the time, though I get tired. Palliative care has helped me manage the chronic nature of the illness: I can deal with the pain most of the time, and when it gets bad, I have good medicine to manage it. Counseling is good too. For me, the hardest part was learning to live my life with shorter time frames. I am not planning 5-10 years ahead, but rather 3 months....I know how I will be for the next three months.
