PP had a point that the best definition of "Northern barbecue" would be bratwurst, grilled on a hibachi, turned with beer-soaked fingers, no utensils. Preferably in the parking lot of an historic ballpark.
This, or Italian sausage with peppers and onions. Also agree with PP who said Italian food might be the only cuisine that Northerners do better. The best Italian food I can find in Virginia is in my own kitchen and I don't have a drop of Italian blood in me. I'm a Northerner born and raised, but I'll readily admit the South wins any food-related contest. Heck, it's half the reason we moved here. My friends from NY have a competitive BBQ team and did well enough that they decided to venture "South" and try their luck. They got their butts handed to them at the Annapolis BarBayCue contest, turned tail for the North and haven't been back since.
