So, if there are no kids who are leaps and bounds above the others, what does that really tell you about children who decipher letters early other than they aren't rock stars? One teacher claimed these children were behind others in the long run. I'm just curious what research there is out there on this. Another claim was that comprehension was built with experience, so experience is really what children need in order to comprehend. What kind of experience though? What does the research say?
I've looked at the research a bit for kids who basically teach themselves to read (I don't know about for children who are explicitly taught.) One issue around early decoding is that this kind of hyperlexic can be a sign of neurological problems - I.e. the ability to decode early (without sufficient comprehension) can actually be the sign of a kid with an ASD. On the other hand you have some neurotypical kids who just learn to read early. https://www.wisconsinmedicalsociety.org/professional/savant-syndrome/resources/articles/hyperlexia-reading-precociousness-or-savant-skill/
