From what I understand slap behind week was at Clemente too. It is possibly overblown. Many things on DCURBANMOM are that way.
I am not sure how you "overblow" boys slapping the bottoms of girls. It should not be tolerated - period. I don't care whether it also happens at a majority white school - it should not happen in any public school. I know here are lots of things that happen in middle schools and high schools that are difficult to monitor and control (drug use, bullying etc.), but this seems pretty straightforward. Can you imagine if you worked at a big company and your male co-workers organized "Slap-Ass" week and the management had a "oh well, boys will be boys" attitude? I think while an adult woman would find the situation very difficult a teenager would find it very upsetting and confusing.
Well of course, but it wasn't tolerated! People on DCUM act like (1) the kids who did it are some kind of irredeemable degenerates and (2) the school administration didn't do anything or treated it lightly. In fact, these are middle school kids who often do inappropriate things when in groups. And the administration found out about it, made clear announcements to kids about consequences should anything like this be observed, informed parents via email and note home (and maybe the recorded phone call, too, I don't remember). And it was a non-issue after that. But people on this board went on and on about how awful Eastern is because of this, how the administration didn't care, etc. etc. I think behind it was a combination of racism/elitism against the non-magnet kids and sour grapes against the magnet kids. Look at the recent color wars incidents at BCC, and the hazing that went on. To me this was much more frightening, and no one ever said BCC was a "rough" school, or cast aspersions on the whole student body, etc.
I heard about the incidents at BCC here and (if I remember correctly) in a local newspaper (perhaps the Gazette) and I agree that it was awful. I don't think it is fair to interject race/class into this discussion because that tends to shut down the conversation. I have been shocked by the language I hear when I pick dc up at Eastern and I am not alone. I hope you are right about the administration being firm about behavior that makes girls feel uncomfortable or unsafe. I hope the students responsible were disciplined. The magnet program is amazing and I think the teachers do a fantastic job. I know my child will be a more confident student at the end of the program - it is sad to see the positive messages dc gets in the classroom undermined by the behavior of some students in the hallways.
Yes, ok, but to be fair .... maybe kids in the "better" schools don't use bad language in the hallways as frequently, but look on their instagram accounts and you will see plenty of F words! My point is just that I think Eastern gets unfairly portrayed in a lot of these comments. And honestly I have NEVER heard kids in the halls cursing. Doesn't mean they don't, but it's not all the time. And it may not be fair to inject race/class but I think that's what a lot of people mean when they say they are uncomfortable with Eastern.
