Thanks OP here. I put in a call to the dermatologist to find out what to do about the boils given the conflicting reports above. I'll post when I know so that hopefully if someone else comes across this they will have the info. Do anyone know where their child got theirs too? I'm guessing the pool.
It's highly contagious so it's hard to know where it came from . If it did come from the pool you wouldn't get it simply from swimming in chlorinated water but maybe from climbing on each other in the pool or sharing towels, pool toys that sort of thing.
No climbing in the pool or sharing towels. My understanding from the literature that I've read is that you can get it from the pool. I called the pool that my son was in and they took it seriously and "shocked" the pool.
I am no expert on this condition and my own son did not get the infection from the pool, nor did he go into the pool when he was infected. But it is my understanding that your skin would need to come into contact with the oils from an infected person's boil (pimple). I'm not seeing how that would be possible from simply swimming in a chlorinated pool, no contact. Sharing towels, that sort of thing is how it's spread. You do not get it simply from breathing in the same air, it isn't like a cold...
