[/quote] If you teach an AP class based on the standards, a student's grade will more often than not reflect his/her test score. Most of students I taught didn't enter with top skills. So they were already behind. Even with scaffolding (quite a bit, I'll add), 9 months isn't enough time to prepare them to 1) think at a much higher level than they're used to and 2) write at a level where they're able to express multiple, complex ideas during a timed writing segment. So a C, for example, translated into a 2 on the test. AP is just good instruction, IMO, and if kids are willing to challenge themselves, then a C is nothing to be ashamed of. But you simply can't close the gap in a year. And too many kids are being pushed into classes to make numbers look good.[/quote]
