The jealousy of HHI/perceived or real social status of you and your DH is a fairly recent revelation of mine.  Yes. Most MILs would be thrilled for and brag about their children's success, but not ours!

My MIL has an extremely narrow worldview and world.  Her life is truly her husband, her one best lady friend she's had for years, her house, grandchildren.  That's about it.  If I do not share MILs opinions, values, fashion choices, child rearing ideas, hell, even recipes, she can't relate and can't even feign interest.  It is increasingly difficult to have even a banal conversation with her, as nearly everything is a potential landmine.

MIL is also narcissistic and this goes along with her narrow worldview.  If if doesn't involve her, she's not interested.

Ultimately, she is the loser; I don't go out of my way to see her, call or interact with her and my kids will follow suit.  My DH takes the kids to see her without me.  A relationship works two ways and I'm too old and too tired to curry her favor like I'm in high school.
