OP- SW has to be one of the most high stress, thankless and underpaid careers. I use to be a school counselor and left that career completely. I'm going back to school this fall for a degree in engineering. I'm 40. It's not to late. Good luck to you.
How did you decide to change from SW to engineering? What kind of engineering?
I'm the PP who is changing from school counseling. I decided on chemical engineering. It's something that I've always wanted to do but in my twenties, for some reason, decided that school counseling was the way to go. That was my career for several years but then I had a child, stayed at home for six years and REALLY didn't want to go back to school counseling. I just couldn't make myself do it. Fortunately DH is supportive and I've been accepted into a great program. I was tired of my career before I had DC but staying at home gave me time to regroup and refocus. If I had never taken that time off I would have stayed at my last job. I'm excited to start over. Even though I have to pump up my self confidence, I'm proud of myself for not getting stuck somewhere that didn't make me happy (or pay well). Take some time off to think about what you truly want to do. I know it's hard to push the suffering clients out of your head but you have to think about you. What do you WANT to do?
