Thanks PP and everyone. DH and I talked it over. We will lose the entire vacation if we wait until 5 days before we have to go to cancel, so I am going to pull the plug. We are fairly heartbroken, but I don't want to risk not being able to do it later. Additionally, I'm hoping to call the number and talk to a live person who can talk me through the deferral process. If I can defer for an actual date, then I'd try to defer for sometime when baby is 6 months old or so and I'm back at work and have had some time to build savings back up. But that would make for like a 10 month gap between being called and serving, so we can't be sure that will work. So....the vacation gets canceled and we just see what we can do to try to avoid eating up my maternity leave. This sucks.
Why are you being such a martyr? Call first then see what your options are.
Serious question, have you read further? I did call. I was specifically told that I must ask for deferral in writing. Then I will be told if my deferral was granted or not 10 days prior to the first date of expected service. Do you not understand the position this puts me in? I have decided not to do the vacation for another reason altogether, basically, I'm hoping against hope that the jury dates I am actually required to serve will coincide with my off duty days - I actually have a larger than usual chunk (6 days in a row between one flight and the next with only one reserve day) that means I stand a decent chance to have to serve at least two jury duty days when I'm already off-duty, which will reduce my chances at having to eat leave. (two of my off duty days are on a weekend, so this does help completely). I realize that it's not a super straightforward thing as most people assume jobs are always 9-5 or set. But my schedule is negotiated monthly and as a relatively less senior pilot, I have less clout with respect to scheduling, and very, very little flexibility otherwise. So to repeat, I'm canceling the vacation because I can't count on the court granting me the deferral. It's not a sure thing and I can't afford to wait until 5 days prior to the trip to cancel out without risking loss of ALL of my deposits. More importantly, I'm hoping (with no guarantee) that the jury duty dates will just happen to work out with my off-duty dates so that I'm only out the cost of childcare. But even this might not work out. If, for example, I would have to serve for the 10 business days spanning that two week period, most of those fall on dates when I have a flight. Moreover, the way our leave is calculated is not standard. There is a physical impossibility clause with respect to returning to work that applies when you miss the first day of a 4 day flight leg. It's not like I can just boot out the reserve pilot who has taken my place. Anyway, there is a big burden on me in doing this, that much is clear. But the problem is that they've gotten much less flexible even for people with a genuine need.
