The Karate places (usually Tae Kwon Do actually) are great. They normally have an hour for schoolwork and an hour of exercise. Very fun and good for them too. We've been doing it for 4 years. Kids are black belts and really enjoy it.
I second this. We've been using a TKD studio for afterschool care for a few years as well. It's a great way to get my kids exercise without me having to cart them to another activity. They love it.
We are looking for after care also for next academic year. Could you please let me know how TKD's work? Do they actually pick up children from school or do parents need to drop them off?
OP here. I just contacted the closest tae kwon do place near our home and they do have aftercare. A van picks them up daily, they do homework for an hour and then they do tae kwon do for an hour. You have to pick them up by 6:00 and it costs $150/week. I'm ok with the cost but I don't necessarily want my son to do tae kwon do daily. I'd rather enroll him in soccer, music, etc. Ugh. I feel like I need to quit my job or cut down my hours so I can pick up my son everyday. DH can comfortably support us financially. We don't need my income.
What's your objection to TKD every day? It's great physical training and teaches kids respect, self-discipline and persistnece that they'll need in other areas of their lives. Are you sure it's TKD every single day? The one my kids go to has TKD 3x a week, interspersed with Korean language lessons, games and free play. Sounds to me like you're looking for someone to tell you it's ok to quit your job. If that's what you want to do, go for it.
Actually no. I would not be happy as a SAHM, which is why I am still working. The tae kwon do place does tae kwon do 4x a week. I would prefer that my child do other activities besides tae kwon do. Maybe I will just use the tae kwon do place so I don't have to stress picking him up at 3:25 daily. I should be able to pick him up at the tae kwon do place by 4:30.
